What happened to old Character AI?
The original interface (beta.character.ai, later old.character.ai) was fully retired in September 2024 — the URLs now just redirect to the current site. In spring 2026 the nostalgia got a second wind when the legacy chat models were retired too, replaced by the newer default model. There's no supported way back: 'Classic Mode' for subscribers restores the old look but not the old models, and 'old version' APKs floating around third-party sites are a known malware vector — don't sideload them.
Why did Character.AI restrict under-18 users?
In late October 2025 the company announced it would remove open-ended chat for minors, and the change took full effect by late November 2025 — teens keep creative features like Stories, but not free-form companion chat. The move followed wrongful-death lawsuits and mounting regulatory pressure over teen safety. Age is now checked with a behavioral model plus ID/face verification as a fallback.
